Canelo vs Munguia: Fight Predictions and Live Stream Details

Get Ready for the Ring: Where to Watch and What to Expect

A Promising Clash Despite Fan Expectations

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the reigning undisputed super middleweight champion and one of boxing’s top stars, is set to defend his titles against Jaime Munguia this Saturday. This bout promises intriguing action, as Munguia comes into the fight on a strong streak and presents a formidable young challenge.

While Canelo vs. Munguia might not be the matchup most fans were clamoring for — especially with a potential bout against the undefeated two-time former champion David Benavidez on the table — Alvarez has expressed disinterest in facing Benavidez, opting instead for this fight.

After some underwhelming performances against Dmitry Bivol, Gennady Golovkin in their third meeting and John Ryder, Alvarez bounced back with a strong showing against Jermell Charlo in September. Alvarez (60–2–2) continues to be a force in the division even with whispers of a decline getting louder.

Munguia, meanwhile, is undefeated at 43–0 but has faced nowhere near the level of competition of Alvarez. Munguia grinded out a decision over Sergiy Derevyanchenko in June 2023 before a TKO win over Ryder in January to earn the opportunity to face his fellow countryman.

Things got heated during the fight week build when Golden Boy CEO and promoter Oscar De La Hoya used his platform during Wednesday’s press conference to rip Alvarez and mention his past failed drug tests. Alvarez rose from his chair to go after De La Hoya and then ripped his former promoter for allegedly stealing money from him and not full paying Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy.

The biggest fight of note features the return of Mario Barrios as he looks to defend his WBC interim welterweight title against Fabian Maidana. Barrios, 28, bounced back from the only two defeats of his pro career in a big way in 2023 when he beat Jovanie Santiago before getting a shot at Yordenis Ugas for the interim crown. Barrios stunned many by battering Ugas around the ring and nearly finishing the former titleholder. Maidana, meanwhile, holds a 22–2 record against mostly unknown competition.

Plus, rising champion Brandon Figueroa looks to continue his run as WBC interim featherweight champion when he takes on Jessie Magdaleno. After suffering the lone defeat of his pro career in November 2021 to Stephen Fulton in what many considered a fight of the year contender, Figueroa made his intentions to move up in weight clear.

And he’s looked the part as a 126-pounder. He scored a TKO of Carlos Castro in July 2022 before claiming the interim WBC title against Mark Magsayo in March 2023. Magdaleno is a solid fighter, but he’s struggled at the elite level and struggled to stay active. He has fought just three times since 2020 and is coming off a decision loss to Raymond Ford in April 2023.

Below is the complete fight card for Alvarez vs. Munguia along with the latest odds. Check back all week long for the latest news, features and other content around this massive event.

Canelo on De La Hoya:

Alvarez, a fighter, expressed his respect for everyone but criticized Oscar De La Hoya for his actions and lack of promotion. He criticized De La Hoya for leaving fighters when needed, and not caring about their well-being. Alvarez believes De La Hoya is unreliable.

Munguia, a potential long-term opponent for Alvarez, has shown maturity and evolution since his debut in 2019. He defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko in a close decision last June, and later moved to Los Angeles under Roach’s guidance. Munguia’s victory over John Ryder in January was seen as a culmination of his maturity.

Alvarez, 33, has been hesitant to fight against fellow Mexicans, but the public’s appetite seems more into the idea of him fighting David Benavidez. Alvarez, who won all four 168-pound titles in 2021, experienced a dip in his next three bouts due to a hand issue. However, he resurgent last September when he dominated Jermell Charlo over 12 rounds, re-establishing himself as a pound-for-pound threat.
